Finally Got Fibre—but Can’t See the Speed?
Your broadband speed and your Wi-Fi speed are not always the same. Run a simple room-by-room test to uncover where your connection is losing performance.

Compare Your Wi-Fi Room by Room
Turn mobile data off
This stops a phone switching to 4G or 5G when the Wi-Fi is weak.
Stay on the same Wi-Fi
Use the same phone and home Wi-Fi for every reading. Pause any VPN while testing.
Pause heavy internet use
Pause large downloads or 4K streaming so each room is compared fairly.

Your room check
Set up your first reading.
Start beside your router
Go to your router first. Start a quick test to compare with the other rooms.
1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps
Base reading
Your starting measurement for comparing the other rooms.
Test the rooms that matter
Choose a room, move there and run its test. Add the next room and repeat.

Your results
Download speed in each room
These are speeds measured on your phone over Wi-Fi. A gap from your package speed alone does not prove a Wi-Fi fault or a problem with your broadband provider.
What the readings suggest
About these estimates
These are planning estimates, not guarantees. Each activity is considered separately for your chosen number of people, using the reading in that room. The room capacities cannot be added together: your broadband and Wi-Fi are shared. We set aside 25% of each reading for variation.
Our allowances are 10 Mbps down per HD stream, 25 Mbps per 4K or 1080p cloud-gaming stream, 4 Mbps each way per HD call, and 20 Mbps down / 8 Mbps up per home worker using calls and cloud apps. These allow more room than some providers' minimums; lower-quality video and lighter work can use less. We checked guidance fromNetflix,Zoom,Microsoft Teamsand NVIDIA.
This short browser test measures download, upload and delay to the test server. It does not measure Wi-Fi signal strength, packet loss, jitter or performance under sustained household load. Your device, Wi-Fi band, VPN, other traffic and the route to the server can affect a reading. Low delay here does not guarantee low delay to a game or call server. A no-connection result can indicate a blackspot, a wider internet outage or an interrupted test.
